5 Questions with Jawanza Evans

Campus & Community
Jan 10, 2025

Jawanza Evans, assistant chief diversity officer for community training, education, and belonging with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, joined 乐播传媒入口 in November. Originally from 鈥淭he Region鈥 (northwest, Indiana) Evans moved to Dubuque, Iowa, after high school and recently relocated to the Des Moines area with her husband, Octavius, and their three children. Despite juggling the responsibilities of her new job and raising three kids, she found time to answer a few questions and introduce herself to the 乐播传媒入口 community.

Q: Can you tell us a little about your family and home life?

A: I am incredibly fortunate to be married to my amazing husband, Octavius Evans. Together, we have three wonderful children: Amya, Octavius Jr. (TJ), and Orion. Outside of work, my time is devoted to my family, especially since our younger children are still in diapers, keeping us quite busy!

Q: What do you do for fun in your spare time?

A: Spending quality time with my family is my favorite way to spend my free time. We often enjoy taking our children to the park, going for walks, attending church, and traveling together. This stage of life is no longer about me, and I feel truly blessed to be fully present, cherishing these moments with my loved ones.

Q: What does your role at 乐播传媒入口 entail?

A: My role involves fostering cultural competence and inclusivity at 乐播传媒入口. I provide education and training through a diversity and inclusion lens and work to guide the College along the Intercultural Development Inventory Continuum. My ultimate goal is to help cultivate a more inclusive and culturally competent community.

Q: What was the path that brought you to 乐播传媒入口?

A: My journey to 乐播传媒入口 has been unique. During my undergraduate studies, I took a course on current events where I completed an assignment called 鈥淪neaky Jesus.鈥 The premise was that what bothers you the most may be the very thing God has called you to address. My project explored the school-to-prison pipeline, and I learned how third grade reading scores were used to project future prison bed needs. At the time, I was working in K鈥12 education as a teacher鈥檚 assistant and supporting a seventh grader reading at a second-grade level. Seeing this young man, who could have been my brother or cousin, struggle within a flawed system ignited a passion in me to work towards systemic change.

The past year has been one of faith and transition. My family decided to relocate to the Greater Des Moines area. During this time, as DEI programs and initiatives faced challenges across the country, I questioned whether I would find a place that shared my commitment to this work. Discovering 乐播传媒入口 during my job search was inspiring. I was impressed by how the institution has stood firm in its dedication to DEI despite political headwinds. The opportunity to align my passions and professional experience with 乐播传媒入口鈥檚 mission was a leap of faith I鈥檓 grateful I took.

Q: What has your experience been like working with 乐播传媒入口ians?

A: My experience working with 乐播传媒入口ians has been incredibly rewarding. I am continually inspired by the enthusiasm and support I鈥檝e encountered when discussing the future goals of my department. Being in an environment where so many individuals share a deep commitment to belonging and inclusion is truly refreshing.

It is especially meaningful to collaborate with colleagues who prioritize the needs of others 鈥 particularly our students 鈥 across campus. This shared dedication amplifies the significance of the work we do. I often say, 鈥淣o one enters the field of education for themselves. Educators choose this path because they believe in the success and growth of the individuals they are called to serve.鈥 乐播传媒入口 embodies this ethos, and I am grateful to be part of such a passionate and purposeful community.
